We had such a lot of fun playing games based around verbs and adjectives this morning. OK, so I know it is officially the 1st day of school holidays but school holidays don't really have any special meaning to Jordan at this stage of his life other than not going to his Montessori Programme for a couple of days and we get to have Play dates with his friend Kate who lives on the other side of Melbourne.
Anyway, back to the games:-
Verb Game: explain that a verb is an action word and then the game starts by telling your child to "Go" ............... You add a verb which they go and do or pretend to do. For example, "GO draw". The fun starts when you add in non-verbs and see if your child is aware that the word is not a verb. We made up a sound/s for when I slipped in the non verb word (much like the Game Show wrong answer sound on TV).
So the game would go something like this, "Go Skip", "Go Jump", "Go Sweep", "Go Table" and Jordan would make his sound which changed continuously and had us in fits of laughter.
Adjective Game: again explain the explanation of an adjective and then play a game of "I spy" describing what you are thinking of with an adjective. For example, "I spy something that is green, lumpy and round". Get your child to say the description a couple of times. This can also be really fun. We also picked out some pictures from a catalogue and had to describe what we were looking with adjectives. Jordan was really good at this and what I thought he was looking at when he started describing his pick wasn't it at all (Yes I was trying to cheat a little but it backfired completely......).
The link for these games comes from here which is a fantastic site for Montessori related learning.
We also quite often incorporate the Noun game into our schooling which is also a lot of fun, especially as Jordan tries to hide his sticky notes that he has put on his choices for the nouns and I have to go hunting for them.
