Sewing Projects

The dust has been dusted off the sewing machine and it has been getting a good workout around here lately. I am also happy to report that there have been no more electric shocks or burns with the new iron although I was a little hesitant in using it and I am keeping the pins well away. They should not have been the culprits but I am not taking any chances - once bitten, twice shy as the saying goes........ First up was a little project from Handmade Home - I couldn't wait to get started on Millie's Hot Pads with some of the gorgeous "Amy Butler" material Melissa sent me. Next on the list came this cute little bag that has been jumping out at me every time I log into "One little Stitch", and the materials used for the Hot Pads also seemed perfect for this. Directions can be found here.

there will certainly be more of these made (in different colours for x'mas presents I am thinking)
So now for my really big project....
"A Pirate Quilt for Jordan" We saw this in Spotlight and loved it so I am going to make it for him for Xmas

our colours chosen, washed and ironed
A Trial run !!
I worked out from this strip that the triangles need to be bigger than the squares to allow for the seems on the side so that the corners don't get cut off. A great lesson to learn and a mistake I won't make again!
New squares cut ready to make into triangles
and the sewing starts tonight !!!

  2. This is the 2nd one I am attempting at the moment too. I am also making a candlewicked quilt for our bed (preparing for the QLD heat when we move back up at the end of the year) or that is the plan anyway.

  3. It will be good to have you in QLD. Do you know what area you are coming up to? I will have to look into candlewicked quilts, i wouldnt know what they are

  4. Candlewicking is a type of embroidery but sort of looks like knots on the material. I love it because it is quick and I am not patient enough to do normal embroidery. I am making the quilt up in squares so it doesn't seem like an enormous job. The patterns I use are by Margaret Upston. You cant see it very well but here is a link to her website which will show you what it looks like.

I made Jordan a candlewicked Teddy Bear Cot quilt when I was pregnat and I just loved it - a nice size for my first quilt.

We are moving up to the Sunshine Hinterland. Jordan is booked into the the River School in Maleny next year so we will see how he goes - he needs the socialisation at the moment.
